Nick Millen OBE
Chairman of the Governing Body
Nick served in the British Army for 35 years before joining (in 2013) Durham School to lead its international development programme. As well as being able to draw on useful experiences from his military career during which he held numerous and varied appointments in both a national and international setting, Nick has sat on school governing bodies in both the public and private sector in England, he chaired the Governing Body at Durham School for Girls Doha during its initial operating years, and he is a member of the Governing Body at Durham Nursery and Pre-Prep School Nairobi.
Although he retired from his appointment as Director of International Operations at Durham School in July 2022, having been involved with Durham School Dubai from its inception he is delighted to have been appointed to Chair the school’s Governing Body and looks forward to seeing it becoming a school of first choice in Dubai.
Although he lives in the north of England, with remote business meetings having become normal practice Nick will be actively involved in the school’s governance from his home, but he looks forward to frequent visits to Dubai and the opportunity to meet and get to know the Durham School Dubai community.
For services to both the military and civilian communities, Nick was privileged to be appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2013.
Statement from the Chair of the Governing Body
Rooted in my memories from school, my experiences as a parent when my own children were at school, my time as a school governor and during the 9 years that I was the Director of International Operations at Durham School, I firmly believe in the importance of an education that provides not just excellent academic outcomes, but also a range co-curricular opportunities that both broadens interests as well as challenges comforts, and a level of pastoral support that nurtures confidence to try something with a committed intent to succeed but without fear of failure: what the Principal succinctly describes as a ‘real education’.
As a ‘branch’ of Durham School in the UK, Durham School Dubai is fortunate to be able to draw on the established experience of its mother school: whilst this support will be of particular importance during our school’s initial operating years, it will endure thereafter. This important relationship notwithstanding, Durham School Dubai is its own school and will quickly establish its own reputation for both the excellence and completeness of the education it provides for children in Dubai.
Together we have much to look forward to.
